In the area of Dunrobin Castle forestry which has recently been opened up by cutting down a number of large trees....
....wooden structures have appeared nailed about four metres above the ground on some of the trunks. Each is formed of three lengths of 6" rough pine planking nailed together with a short plank across the top.We can only guess that this is a shelf or platform on which a bird, perhaps a raptor, can build a nest but an internet search hasn't produced anything looking like them. Has anyone any suggestions as to what they can be?
Hello Jon,
ReplyDeleteIs there anything worth stealing in Dunrobin castle forestry? A few years ago while driving across moorland North of Little Loch Broom I came across a sign warning that « anti sheep rustling CCTV » was in operation, maybe these wooden structures will be used to install some sort of CCTV or infrared wildlife cameras? Squirrel feeders are another possibility I can think of. The orientation of these platforms or brackets might give us a clue, I’m sure you will have an explanation in due time, but thank you for inviting us to solve this new puzzle.
While I’m here, I think you may want to have a look at the excellent Walkhighlands website, you will be amazed by the photo they used in their article published on the first of April. This is connected with the theme of your previous blog: raptors on the nest.
Bat roosts?
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the comments.
ReplyDeleteI think these are bat 'boxes': I've had a couple of other people confirm this.
Thank you for your suggestion, Regis. Will do.
Jon
