We walked through Speckled Wood this morning on our way down to the village, putting up a roe deer which ran too quickly for a photograph. The light wind and warm sunshine obviously suited the wood's butterfly namesakes as they....
....were out in numbers, spending much of their time chasing each other or sunning themselves on the path.
Other butterflies were also out, including this red admiral and what might well have been a female orange-tip. These, with the butterflies yesterday at Littleferry, restored my hopes that our local butterflies aren't in terminal decline though we still haven't seen any in our garden other than the one painted lady.
A recently-dug hole beside the path intrigued us. It was the sort of dimensions of an average-sized hole a dog might have dug on a sandy beach but this one had....
....a dozen or so bumblebees crawling around in it. I can only guess that a badger had found their nest and dug it out to get at the bees' food reserves.
