Hardly a breath of wind this morning, the mist sitting damply across the fields, the sun obscured, skeins of pink-footed geese passing overhead, calling but invisible.Normally I prefer to walk under open skies but this weather seemed perfect for a wander through the local forestry as it offers so much variety, from this area of mature deciduous trees to........areas where the Scots pines seem to grow out of fields of dying bracken. With the ground almost carpeted by leaves the fungi are difficult to find - except those with bright colours, like this orange peel fungus which has been growing in this spot since September. One fungus which I did find is one we've not seen in some time: candlesnuff fungus which grows........on the rotting remains of hardwood trees.
