A Winter Walk in the Woods

It's a chill, still, grey day here, with the temperature hovering around zero even under a persistent cloud cover. Anywhere the land is open to the sky is under the heel of a ground frost, the ice persisting all day, so walking is only possible in safety with the ice grips we attach to the soles of our boots. However....

....there is no frost in the close woodland, the paths muddy instead, so it's not surprising that.....

....a few fungi are still growing. Almost all of them are species which grow on dead wood, particularly birch. I continue to struggle with identification but the further of the two in this picture is a polypore, possibly the smoky polypore Bjerkandera adusta, while...

....this may be turkey tail, Trametes versicolor.

Its as well that the fungi are still providing interest, even if it is a frustrated interest, as there's very little else stirring in the deep woods. However, returning along the front below Dunrobin Castle we spotted....

....two juvenile swans swimming on a glassy sea. It's difficult to identify the species at a distance but they may be trumpeters.
