A walk in a very blowy Dunrobin woods this morning included an encounter with a flock of small birds working their way along lichen-covered branches high above us. Most were blue tits but some were....
....goldcrests - the distinctive yellow-gold crown is just visible on this one's head. However, one of them might have been ........a firecrest, a related kinglet. In the poor light of the woodland it's difficult to tell them apart but this one does have a marginally redder crown which would suggest it is a firecrest.Firecrests don't breed in this part of Britain, this being confined largely to the south and east of England, but individuals can be blown across the North Sea in winter from Norway. It's frustrating not to be able to make a definite identification as we have never yet, knowingly, seen a firecrest.
