It's rarely that we see a ship out in the Moray Firth and disappointing when, as happened today, a rare visitor was only briefly visible between showers.
This is the Jomi, a Bahamian-registered bulk carrier en route from Riga in Latvia to Reykjavik in Iceland. She was moving when I saw her but later reported by the AIS MarineTraffic website to be at anchor. She has a bit of a history around here. In 2017 she dragged her anchor off Wick when her engines wouldn't start and had to be taken in tow by the Wick lifeboat.
I love ships. I've travelled on all sorts - cargo, passenger, cruise liner, ferry, fishing boat - and worked on some - fishing and cargo boat - and was brought up to be quite at ease boarding one with my father to meet the captain. In more recent years we've been on cruise liners which, if one does one's own thing, are a great way to see the world. And one of the adventures of our life, our two years in Jamaica, started with an Atlantic crossing from Amsterdam to the Caribbean.
I'd love, once again, to be on board a ship, to be free to lean on the rail with the wind on my face and look out across the ocean; and to let time slip by.
