Another Butterfly!

Great excitement - the three butterfly species in yesterday afternoon's garden were joined late on by another, a small speckled wood - so, probably, as male. This is only the second time we've seen one of this species in the garden.

Compared to the peacocks, red admirals and painted lady, the speckled wood is dressed in dowdy colours but....

....it does its best to make up for them by the patterns on its underwings.

Happily, the painted lady was back in our sunny garden this morning, along with admirals and peacocks, but the speckled wood had gone. Maybe he'll be a late arriver, as he was yesterday.

We're thrilled to see so many butterflies in the garden but this joy that our planting has been so successful is tempered by the depressing fact that nowhere else around Golspie do we see butterflies.
