The Edge of the Forest

On the mornings when we walk down the track through the forestry to the village we stop at this view and look out over the field to where we used to see up to three roe deer feeding close to the far fence. We haven't seen one there in ages, any more than we've seen deer on other walks, their absence from this field probably hastened by the recent shooting of one nearby.

The view reminds me of a stay in a cabin at....

....Rocky Mountain Buffalo Ranch near Golden, a small town in British Columbia which nestles in a trench between the Purcell and Rocky Mountains. There, sitting on the veranda sipping our sundowners, we...

....looked out across a field to the trees and mountains beyond, and waited for the gathering dusk to draw out....

....a small herd of white-tailed deer.

There was something very special about those few minutes as night drew in. The deer knew that we were watching, and they allowed it; and we felt very privileged.
