New Year's Day

We woke to find that there was no sign of snow overnight and that a ship had anchored off Golspie, a sure sign that the weather would deteriorate.

On checking the Marine Traffic website we saw that no less than three ships had taken refuge. 1 is an old friend, the Esvagt Alba, while 2 is the FS Aquarius and 3 the Vestland Artemis.

Despite increasing snow showers, most of them wet enough not to leave any settled snow, we walked down to the village to buy a paper from the Co-Op, finding a trickle of traffic on the A9 and....

....Main Street deserted of humans.

  1. The green road sign says "Haste ye back". I like that. I have read this on road signs frequently in Scotland and it is something that is missing in England. English signs are often thankful for driving carefully but they ommit the personal touch. Though born and living in England, I am so drawn to Scotland, for the scenery, people, geology, climate, wildlife and clear ocean waters but this sign brings the whole Scotish society into the attraction; that people matter, whoever you are, and this is missing down south as the expanding population dilutes the feeling of kinship.

    1. Totally agree with you, Derryck. It's what we noticed when we made the poor decision to swap Ardnamurchan for Felixstowe. Courtesy is something that many English and, sadly, many sections of modern society has forgotten,
