A Cold Start to May

With April breaking temperature records - even in the north of Scotland the thermometer almost hit 20C on the 30th - May has set out to be exceptionally cold, with the mercury today only just reaching double digits and a strong, gusty north to northwesterly making it feel even colder. To make matters even more miserable, the wind's bringing in sharp showers which, with the sun out, have made today a monkey's wedding day *.

In the circumstances one would hardly expect any butterflies to be out but in Speckled Wood half a dozen....

....speckled woods were chasing each other around, crashing to the ground each time there was a shower.

Even when the sun warmed us - this picture of a green-veined white was taken on the last day of April - very few butterflies were out. Recently we've seen peacocks, orange tips, whites and speckled woods, with the speckled woods the only ones flying in any numbers.

And to remind us that time flies, even when the butterflies don't, the dandelions are already busy spreading their seeds.
