In the Garden

Storm Amy rather flattened our garden, but most of the flowers did survive, the leggy verbena and michaelmas daisies despite being knocked over. This is just as well, as the storm has been followed by some fine weather, with increasingly light winds, plenty of sunshine, and temperatures up to 16C - quite warm enough to bring out any remaining butterflies. but....

....the only species which has reappeared is the red admiral, though we're down now to three individuals out of the five we've had recently.

On the positive side, the cabbage whites haven't reappeared, though for much of our broccoli crop it's a bit late as the....

....caterpillars have enjoyed what was planted for us.

One of the things one doesn't want to see in the garden is disease, and it's particularly upsetting when this example involves one of my favourite small birds, the....

....dunnock. The strange red bulge on its chin doesn't seem to have affected it too much, but it wasn't drinking normally and it seemed sluggish in its reactions. I hope it survives, but I also hope it doesn't pass whatever this is on to the other birds.
