There is no reason for the particular memory picture which my brain chooses to flash into my mind. It is occasional, utterly arbitrary, and only lasts for a few, vivid moments before it fades. Sometimes, as in this case, I have a photograph of a similar scene.
Driving the Yellowhead Highway, Canadian Route 16 west from Edmonton towards Jasper, the landscape gradually evolves from the flat land around Edmonton to the gently rolling hills beyond Medicine Lodge. The road we follow is a clinically engineered, immaculately maintained dual carriageway which strides confidently across the miles.
Then, suddenly, one comes over a rise and the Rockies stand like a great wall across our path. Wow!
