We were only commenting yesterday as we walked along the beach and surveyed a great expanse of empty sea that we hadn't seen a single ship since we'd been here - and today we see the first, far out in the middle of the Dornoch Firth to the southeast of us.
Her position is marked as a green dot on this screenshot from the Marine Traffic app, which tells us that she's the BBC Adriatic, an Antigua & Barbuda registered general cargo ship launched in 2008 and currently en route to Drogheda in Ireland - except she isn't, as she's at anchor, perhaps because of the incoming Storm Dennis.
One of the things that has surprised us is that we don't see any fishing boats, not since the one boat kept here at Golspie was hauled out of the water for the winter.
