Out to Sea

The only sunshine between the showers on today's walk benefitted George the Earl up on his plinth rather than all the rest of us lowly humanity, and there was very little washed up on Golspie's south beach to interest us except....

....a very beautiful and almost perfect quill, perhaps from a passing goose and....

....six good golf balls which will go on sale at our local charity shop tomorrow at an exceptionally reasonable price of 10p each or five for 60p, so it was just as well that there was some action out to sea.

A flock of over twenty divers were preening themselves, and occasionally diving, a short distance out, watched from the shore by a couple of oystercatchers.

They look like red-breasted merganser which form flocks during the early winter, their numbers increased by visitors from Northern Europe.

We also stopped to watch a passing flock of eider, rather far out, perhaps on their way to Littleferry where their absence was noted yesterday.

However, the highlight of our walk was spotting dolphins off the beach, sadly too far out for any good pictures. Nor was it possible to be certain how many there were in the pod but....

....we saw three on the surface at one time, which gives us a minimum, but we didn't think there were many in all.

This is only the third time we've spotted dolphins off the beach here, perhaps another reflection of the paucity of prey out in the Moray Firth.
