Signposts of Spring

One by one, the signposts of spring appear, the first bright wildflower I couldn't identify until I was home and could look it up - it's common fumitory - and....

....the greater spotted woodpeckers drumming on trees to attract a mate - except this ambitious individual had found that a power pole was far noisier than a rotten tree trunk - and....

....the beginnings of the return of the fungi, though we would be very fortunate indeed if this year was as good for them as last year.

And at this time of year everyone's in their finest gear, not least the siskins which, after such a long absence through the winter, are now to be seen every day at our bird feeders.
