We encountered a variety of birds along the beach at Littleferry today, starting with what may have been the same small flock of sanderlings we saw last Monday. However, joining them were large numbers of....
....eider which were gathering in rafts of over a hundred out to sea.Just inside the mouth of the loch we saw a sandbank on which a mixture of birds was resting. These included........more sanderlings, around 200 oystercatchers, perhaps fifty sandwich terns - far fewer than on Monday - and, on an adjacent shingle bank, what was probably........a large flock of redshanks. There may have been other species mixed in - there were definitely some gulls - but all seemed to be taking turns in........a bit of brisk exercise out over the fast in-running tide.
