Winter's Return

We're into March and, if one looks hard, there are the first signs of spring but winter has changed, with the worst of its weather not infrequently arriving late. So, starting today and continuing over the next few days, we are promised plenty of snow showers and plunging temperatures, perhaps as low as -5C tomorrow night, all brought in on a bitter northerly wind.

We woke to snow showers so today's walk was a prudent one in thick woodland, brightened by....

....some joyously sunny intervals. The woods are beginning to green, with....

....new grass in the clearings, where this broken egg was lying. I have little idea of what it is, perhaps a wood pigeon, perhaps one of the crows, but it does seem a little early for egg-laying.

A wander in the forestry these days has to pass the scarlet elf cup patch where five minutes of hunting produced more fruiting bodies, bringing the total up to sixteen. In the sunshine, with the bright contrast against the moss, they're even more striking.
