Farlary - 2

It's noticeable how short this year's flowering season has been for the ling, which probably hasn't been helped by the recent dry weather. While there were bees and other insects still enjoying it, the most conspicuous were....

....the red admirals. By contrast, the only other butterflies we saw were....

....speckled woods which were exploiting the remaining bell heather.

This lochan is the best place on the croft for dragon- and damselflies. The most abundant were....

....the black darters, with the males posturing in the sunshine but very quick....

....to seize a passing female. However, one took a particular fancy to....

....Mrs MW, perhaps drawn to her by the insect repellent she was using.

The only other dragonfly species we saw were hawkers, perhaps common hawkers, and then only briefly as the darters were quick to chase them away.

Mrs MW spotted this stoat peering at us from one of its runs through the grass. Although it was only about three metres away it didn't seem worried by us, watching rather intently as I took its picture before finally deciding we probably weren't edible.
