A Late Spring Gets Later


This time a year ago a good show of primroses was fading, while wood anemone, violets, campion and cuckooflower were in bloom. This year, the hedgerows and banks have a few, sad-looking primroses, we've only found one patch of self heal (above) and....

....the wood anemone is only just appearing in Golspie Glen along with....

....this, still unidentified grass (or sedge); and very little else.

The one flower that seems to be enjoying the conditions is the wood sorrel in Dunrobin Woods.

It's not surprising that most spring wildflowers are so loath to appear this year. The temperature struggles to reach 10C at midday; it drops below zero at night; and there's a chill wind blowing through most of the day.
