Snow in May

Yesterday's post talked about a late spring getting later but today's view out of the bedroom window at 6.30 this morning suggested we were heading back into winter.

The Scottish Highlands are usually at their best, and sometimes warmest, in May. It's early days to judge the May of 2021 but our attitude, as always, is that, as long as one puts on the right gear and sets out upon a walk....

....the sun will probably come out - which it did, highlighting the fresh green leaves of grass and moss, of celandine and bluebell.

It is this unpredictability and sudden variety that I do so like about this country's climate. Yesterday was a good example, when the forecast suggested a day at home curled up in front of a peat fire would be sensible, yet we went out and walked over four miles and the sun shone so hard that we ate a picnic lunch al fresco on the shores of Loch Fleet.

Today's more mundane walk, through Dunrobin woods in moments of sleet and bright sun, produced a sighting of a great spotted woodpecker on a garden peanut feeder.
