Ospreys Return

We'd heard that the ospreys had returned to Balblair Woods so, this morning, we set off to see them. There used to be as many as four osprey nests in the woodland surrounding Loch Fleet but two have been abandoned, and one of the remaining nests is very difficult to access.

When we first reached the remaining accessible nest it was empty but, shortly afterwards, we heard....

....an osprey calling, and them saw two wheeling above the tops of the pine trees. By the time we returned to the nest....

....the female was in it.

Seeing the first ospreys is one of the waymarkers of our year. It's a relief to know they've made it safely back from their wintering grounds in Senegal and The Gambia, a journey which takes them about three to four weeks.
