A heavy mist lay across the fields this morning leaving the spiders' webs on the trellis fence outlined by dewdrops but by midday the sun had burnt it back so I sat in the warmth and watched the bumblebees busy in the toadflax. Yesterday I was remembering the excitement of a bush pig at Sadaani. Today the....
....wildlife excitement was provided by the first peacock in some weeks who chose to spend just a few moments sunning himself on one of the flagstones before going upon his way.
Later a red admiral arrived to sip briefly at the buddleia's second flowering but he, too, didn't stay long. It's as if these insects know they are increasingly rare so feel they have to spread the pleasure of their presence as widely as possible.
Then a kestrel perched on a neighbour's television aerial and watched me as I watched him. We saw him the other day in the old barn just to the west of us, harassed by a pair of magpies.
He stayed for a few moments, as if to make certain I had seen him, then he too....
....went upon his way.
