Butterfly Plant

My mistake - I thought the buddleia was the top butterfly bush for the number of insects it attracts but it comes a pale second compared with the michaelmas daisies which have just come in to full flower in our garden. Of course today's warm, sunny afternoon helped but our six michaelmas daisies became a mass....

....of bustling, buzzing insects, including several species of bumblebee and....

....innumerable hover flies which, in their greed to find the best nectar blooms....

....thought nothing of climbing over any rivals, however big.

Butterflies came out in numbers we haven't seen in the garden this year, with half-a-dozen red admirals and slightly fewer peacocks joining in the scramble, while one....

....lonely but delicately pretty speckled wood was tempted out of the nearby forestry.

The frenzy was such that some of the less bright butterflies mistook....

....the lilac asters in the front beds for overlarge michaelmas daisies.
