Migrants Return

As we ate breakfast a pair of goldfinches arrived and, as usual, ignored the nyjer bought specially for them and tucked in to the bird seed put out for the other, less special small birds. I swear I'll never buy nyjer again. That said, it was great to sit and watch these spectacularly dressed little birds.

Our morning walk started along Golspie's rather mundane promenade where we met the first sanderling of the year, doing their thing of running up and down with the waves. There were only six of them and we saw much larger flocks last year so we hope there are more to come.

The wind in the last few days has spent time in the northeast so there was a fair swell coming in to the beach. These northeasters have the effect of removing the sand from the beach so all the recent gains have been lost.

I misjudged the time of low tide so, with the beach submerged, we walked along the sea wall beside the golf course where we noticed that the small quarry, visible below the three white posts....

....is once again home to some sand martins but, as with the sanderling, far fewer than last year.

They appear to be nesting, not in the larger hole but in the smaller one to upper left of it.
