The Small Things

As we crossed the Golspie Burn at the start of our walk into Dunrobin Woods this morning we spotted one of the dippers working its way upstream and Mrs MW commented on how important these small things are in keeping up our spirits as we work our way through this difficult time of year.

Not that today could really be described as 'deepest winter' with the temperature reaching 10C, though the effect was rather spoiled by the chill in a strong southwesterly wind.

Nor, she insisted, should we be wishing the days away until spring arrives, having relatively few of them left to waste, so it was particularly good of Mother Nature to....

....help by bringing spring forward: we found the first snowdrops pushing up through the leaf litter in a patch of woodland close to the castle walls, the same place as we saw the first ones last year, though that wasn't until January 25th.

Seeing the first snowdrops may seem a small thing: it isn't, as it was quite surprising how much they, like the dipper, lifted our spirits.
