South Beach

Golspie's south beach was almost deserted when we arrived this morning just in time for low water at 10.30, to find that the falling tide had left....

....blue jellyfish scattered along the beach, none of them very big, not above 10cm.

We last saw blue jellyfish in June, on one of the few occasions last year that there were any jellyfish along the beach.

We were on the lookout for signs of waders nesting and, perhaps, a very careful sneak view of the eggs, but all we saw were a few oystercatchers and....

....a group of half a dozen curlew which landed on the lower beach before dashing up above the high-tide line to feed.

This is the section of beach where, in previous years, we found the nests of oystercatchers and ringed plovers. That there is no sign of birds nesting is depressing but a recent New Scientist article has suggested that one of the contributory factors to the fall in waders nesting may be disturbance by dogs.
