We woke this morning to low cloud, drizzle, a chill wind, and a temperature which was struggling to reach 14C when we set off for a walk along the beach below Dunrobin Castle - but our spirits were lifted by our finding not a single dead seabird along a beach which, a few weeks ago, had around twenty, so it does look as if the worst of the H5N1 bird flu outbreak, locally at least, may be over.
To cheer us further, the beach seemed to have more shore birds active along it than usual. Along with gulls and cormorants, there were sandwich terns, a couple of grey herons, oystercatchers, a few curlews and some ringed plovers. More, when scanning the rocks with the binoculars, we spotted a flock of redshanks busy working through the boulders, a species which has been in short supply recently: there are six hidden in this picture.
