Winter Red Admiral

I don't mind turning up a little early for a dental appointment as the practice is housed in what used to be the rectory of St Mary's church, which is next door and has a couple of benches in its carefully-tended graveyard. This morning the sky was cloudless so the wait was almost a pleasure until....

....the day was made a little special by the arrival of a red admiral which settled on the clusters of small white flowers on the shrub next to the bench.

Last night the air temperature in our back garden dropped below freezing and there was a white ground frost, so it is quite remarkable that this butterfly was out today - and it was joined by several hover flies, all busy on the flowers on what I think is a viburnum, perhaps Viburnum tinus.
