Worth the Struggle

Is it true that the things that are most worthwhile doing are those that one has to make a bit of effort to achieve? This is our son David doing a bit of the struggling, in this case....

....to visit and take pictures of a popular tourist site at the wrong time of year, April, when the winter in southern Alberta hadn't quite finished. Certainly, to read a notice at the entrance to the 'Red Rock Coulee Natural Area' which promised 'No Exit' was a little daunting, but we persisted, and the sweat was well worth it as....

....we had this superb site all to ourselves on a day when the combination of snow and sunshine made the scene quite magical.

The main feature are these slightly squashed spheres of rock which have been weathered out of the sediment that once contained them. They're 'concretions', formed by groundwaters moving through the strata allowing a mineral which they have dissolved to recrystallise around a centre, sometimes a fossil which, as a result, can be superbly preserved.

The site is well worth the effort but there was a bonus, as our eyes were drawn south, across miles of rolling Alberta lands, to Montana in the USA and the magnificent peak of Gold Butte.
