Garden Murder

This is a sparrowhawk in our back garden this morning behaving in a most peculiar manner...,

....every now and then raising its head to look around, before....

....turning its attention back to something it was shielding. It was only after a moment or two that we realised that the shrill shrieking we could hear....

....was coming from a starling which the hawk was plucking while it was still very much alive.

Give the starling its due, it put up a good fight but its frenzied pecks were ignored by its attacker....

....which seemed unconcerned by me, not ten metres away, taking pictures, but which was worried by a walker with a dog passing the end of the garden - bothered enough for the hawk to pick up its still-struggling victim and fly away over the fence.
