It's been a very late spring, and the cold weather has put back some of the first sightings of emerging wildlife by several weeks. This is the first peacock butterfly of the year, sunning itself by the side of the track at Strathpeffer on Saturday, where I also managed....
....the first picture of one of the warblers that are arriving back from Africa. This is a chiffchaff who had a very loud "chiff-chaff-chiff-chaff" call. There must be something special about this short section of path just beside Dunrobin castle. It was where we saw the first snowdrops of the year and the first celandines, and now it boasts........some very early bluebells. There's no sign of them anywhere else. This wasn't what I was out looking for this morning: we should be seeing the first wild violets of the year and there's absolutely no sign them.
This, too, was unexpected, and caught our attention while we were eating lunch. A pair of swallows was swooping around the rooftops and, while this is a good picture of our neighbour's gable end, you can just see one of the swallows beyond it.
