Nyjer

The local goldfinches are infuriatingly frustrating. We see them occasionally, in passing, but they won't come down to the bird feeders. We thought that this might be because they didn't like mixing with the sparrow hoi polloi so, for the second time in recent years, we spent a small fortune on a bag of what is supposed to be prime goldfinch fodder and something which sparrows can't eat, namely....

....nyjer seed. Needless to say the goldfinches ignored it and the nyjer, which we put out both in a hanging feeder and a small bowl, was busy rotting - until, yesterday at breakfast, we looked out to see....

....a siskin on the hanging feeder. We were absolutely thrilled as, while siskins have been around recently, we'd like to see much more of this pretty little bird. Better still, within minutes the male was joined by....

....a second male and a female, this male being even more interesting as he has been ringed. Not only did they feed, they had a good drink, though the bird bath has dangerously steep sides and is too deep for them to bathe in without drowning.

We do hope they come back and that their interest in the nyjer will help attract the goldfinches.
