In one of the bright sunny breaks between today's snow showers we were watching two gulls out on the playing field by our house when one seized the other and a tussle began. We weren't sure whether they were being amorous - in which case we needed to do something about the chimney to make sure they didn't nest there - or whether....
The scrap continued for several minutes with the two fairly evenly matched....
....rolling around on the ground and, at times, upside down until........one of them managed to get a killer hold at which point the other, with its opponent's beak........in its eye, managed to break off the fight and fly away.We were interested spectators and so were a couple more seagulls. Perhaps they were the females and these were two males deciding who was going to have first choice of bride for this season.
