We've had two lovely dogs staying with us the last couple of days, very well mannered, one of whom left this on the kitchen doormat this morning, perhaps by way of a small parting gift.
It's a fully engorged, two-year old female sheep tick, at a stage in its life cycle during which it is ready to mate and fall off the host before producing its eggs.
The quickest way of disposing of it was down the kitchen sink but it was so big it wouldn't go down the drain, so it had to be retrieved and flushed down the toilet.
