Crossbill

On yesterday's early evening walk up into the forestry at the back of our house we spotted this little bird sitting silently, minding its own business high in a tree, silhouetted against the grey of the sky. We see lots of birds like this so I don't know why I took a couple of photographs as I passed it but I'm so glad I did as, after some work on the picture using the miracles of modern technology, it turned out to be....

....a crossbill.

I really don't know what sort of crossbill it is as its coloration is confusing - usually the male in browny-red and the female green - but it really doesn't matter: they're not common birds so it's always good to see a crossbill.
