First Osprey

Storm Kathleen is giving us a bright day of sunny intervals and squally southerly winds strong enough to produce whitecaps on Loch Fleet, which is where we spent our morning, primarily in the hope of seeing the first osprey of the year.

We spent some time in the bird hide in Balblair Woods seeing several pairs of shelduck....

....redhanks, the occasional curlew and....

....small flocks of widgeon but the highlight of the day was when Mrs MW spotted....

....an osprey with, possibly, a second flying higher behind it.

We checked the one nest whose location we know and it looked deserted so this may not be the pair we've watched in the past but, whether they're 'our' pair or not, it's good to see them safely back from their winter wanderings in West Africa.
