Caged Birds

We keep any bird food that isn't hung up in a cage. This makes it sound as if we're trying to catch wild birds but its purpose is benign - it allows the smaller birds in - up to the size of a blackbird - but keeps the larger and greedier birds, such as wood  pigeons, out. The feast before those who are lucky enough to be able to access it is, from left, fat cake, high energy food, and - a new introduction apparently favoured by the robins - meal worms.

The principal customers for these delicacies are dunnocks, of which we have at least two....

....blackbirds - of which we've seen very few recently - and....

....robins. The other birds, such as the goldfinches, siskins, house sparrows and chaffinches, prefer the grains, particularly the sunflower seed kernels.

We have two robins currently vying for control of our back garden. They are....

....so alike I suspect that they may be from the same brood.
