I walked up the track that runs to the west of our house, climbing a long, gentle uphill slope which gives views across to Silver Rock on which the heather's blooms are........now dying. The cross-leaved heath is usually the first to go, followed by the bell heather (above) with the ling last - though the ling's flowers seem to have the shortest lives. There are flowers which I associate with this stage of late summer, such as the devil's-bit scabious, just as I associate........blackberries with this time of year, of which, despite the lack of rain, there seems to be a good crop.I was met on my return home by the usual butterflies in the garden - three red admirals, a white, and the painted lady. On my walk I saw just one butterfly, a white, so our garden is seen by the local butterfly population, such as it is, as a good place to frequent.
