We spent this weekend in Lochaber in a village named for the bridge over the small river which passes through it - Roybridge, Gaelic Drochaid Ruaidh, the red bridge. Our walk today took us down into the gorge formed by our local river, the Golspie Burn, where it cuts through red Sutherland Sandstones.
It's a dank place, particularly after recent rain, where the fungi are thriving, but what caught our eye today was the colour of its waters. I have often used the term 'whisky' to describe the colour of the water of a Scottish river, and that........seemed very appropriate for the waters of the Golspie Burn today, until we looked where the light penetrated the canopy to illuminate........the deepest pools - and there's no doubt that this burn should have been called the Allt Ruaidh.
