We had more snow last night and temperatures fell to zero so the walk this morning was a gentle one, along the coast track past Dunrobin Castle with views back across Golspie to The Mound. The walk passes several....
....thickets of sea buckthorn whose berries aren't the birds' favourite food - rowan berries come top - but which several species do enjoy, including........the robins. Each thicket has one of these characters. They watch from the cover but, if we're patient, soon........ come closer as if hoping to be offered something a little more exciting than sea buckthorn berries.
The blackbirds do seem to enjoy this fruit, and one wonders whether the orange mouth is stained by its juices. Each year when we do this walk at around this time we tick off the list of species we've seen in the buckthorn before. This is a male blackcap to go with the female we saw the other day, and........this is a fieldfare, one of........several which were working their way through the fruit. Their frequent companions, the redwings, were also feeding though none came close enough for a picture. So we've ticked off all the 'expected' species: now we hope for something unexpected.
