First Objective

We woke to rain which was obviously falling as snow a little higher on the hill so a walk in the low-level forestry might have been sensible but instead we set off up....

....the road to the crofting community of Backies, with the going underfoot deteriorating as we climbed and encountered increasing amounts of snow and black ice.

Our objective - I do like setting off with an 'objective' - was this road junction in Backies where, just to the right of the post box, there's....

....the converted fridge which, if we are lucky, contains the most beautiful free-range eggs.

We are quite used to finding the cupboard bare, particularly in miserable winter weather when the hens have every right to be on strike, but today we were in luck, setting off homewards with half-a-dozen beautiful, big brown eggs.

Backies was just at the level where the precipitation couldn't make up its mind whether to fall as rain or sleet or slushy snow, and the mist was coming down on the ben and steaming out of the conifer plantations on its flanks, but we returned with a small feeling of success, the first objective of the new year having been achieved.
