A Holiday

We've been away for a few days, exploring the area between Beauly and Drumnadrochit, a landscape of dense woodland cleared over the years to provide rich pasture for cattle and sheep, a landscape cut in places by steep-sided glens where....

....some of the trees grow to impressive heights - this is Reelig Glen which is home to four of the tallest trees in Britain, including a douglas fir which has reached over 66m in height.

The cottage we stayed in, a converted croft house, had an impressive rowan arch over its front gate, perfect for keeping out witches, and was adjacent to....

....a working farmyard where old machinery and collapsing buildings provided perfect homes....

....for unusual birds such as this linnet. Sitting in the garden we watched swallows plunge through the door of one of the old byres and....

....bullfinches which approached to within a few feet of us, while above us....

....we saw no less than four species of raptor, red kites, buzzards, kestrels - nesting in one of the nearby Scots pines - and a medium-sized bird we could not identify.
