Autumn's Summer Wildflowers

This is the single-track road which runs from Golspie to Littleferry, which is only remarkable for the paved pedestrian path which runs beside it, an attempt by the council, one assumes, to persuade people to walk from Golspie to Balblair woods and on to Littleferry itself. At the back of the conifers lies the golf course, while to the right a drystone wall, which dates back to the establishment of the post-clearance farms, separates the road from open fields.

We noticed when walking along it that wildflowers were not only doing rather well against the stonework but also that....

....species which were finished for the year elsewhere were thriving there.

This may in part be because the council doesn't cut or poison between the track and the wall, but also because the stonework faces south and has been soaking up what sun we have recently had. As well as pink and white campion, poppies and pansies....

....there were several of this delicate common fumitory, Fumaria officinaris. There was also....

....this species which I hadn't catalogued during the summer - it's bugloss, distinguished by its small blue flowers and spiny leaves.
