The temperature in our back garden when we set off for a late-afternoon wander along the beach was an unprecedented 24C at the end of a day which had started....
....with a passing thunderstorm which brought only a few drops of rain to gardens which are sorely in need of a good watering. What was a pleasant amble was marred by finding this, a kittiwake sitting amid the cobbles at the top of the beach not minding when we approached to within a few metres. Either it's very tame, or exhausted (perhaps by the warm weather), or it's sick.Happily the beach in the last few days has been crowded with shore birds. These are a small part of a flock of what must have been well over fifty redshanks, and we saw a flock of thirty or so oystercatchers.Better still, we've seen gannets out in the firth diving for fish. Gannets are a species that has suffered severely from bird 'flu, so they were a very welcome sight.
