For some months we haven't been able to follow our favourite local walk, which leads from the Littleferry road through the woods to the beach, this because the Sutherland Estate has been carrying out felling of the conifers - there are a few deciduous trees in the wood. Happily, they haven't clear-felled the wood but removed selected trees, which has opened up the views in what was once a dense plantation.
It was in this wood that we first found creeping lady's tresses, an orchid which we've since found elsewhere in the area, and today we were just in time to see the last of the year's flowering of this delicate little plant. The wood is also a good spot for fungi and there were plenty to interest us. I'm wary of identifying them, but I think this may be one of the brittlegills. What's so enjoyable about this walk is its contrasts. After the woodland we crossed the links onto the beach, along which we walked to Littleferry. The sands were empty of other humankind this morning but along the tidelines we found a few dead birds, some jellyfish and........this little gull which stood its ground until were very close, before........flying off to join a nearby flock. I think they're kittiwakes, a bird we haven't seen here before, the greyer ones being juveniles and the ones with yellow beaks and white heads the adults.
